London Fashion Week & Social Media: The Good & Bad Points

Despite London Fashion Week now being over, the social hype is still going on, and while the internet has made it better for consumers to follow London Fashion Week without having to be a ‘somebody’, there are concerns that there is too much information floating around which questions the quality of sources spreading these updates.

The London Fashion Week Daily newspaper has already back lashed against ‘Twagerism’ (plagiarism on Twitter) where members of the social media platform are quoting other peoples tweets as their own and not crediting them “No one has the guts to go up to a designer anymore and ask, they just re-tweet. It’s so lazy, not to mention bad manners”. As much as this annoys bloggers, designers and brands, content on social networks fly around so fast now it might just be hard to monitor these types of ‘bad’ Tweeters.

There are many consumers now that are enjoying the chance to get involved with Fashion Week online (Mashable even wrote an article on how to follow it) and brands are taking this opportunity to better engage with fans, as well as advertising and of course selling. The positive of social media from the brands point of view is that chatter can be measured by sentiment, giving key information into what’s liked, disliked, and shared. The people sharing information are promoting brands for free and giving real insights into predicting the success of collections and events. #LFW had an average mention of every 14 seconds online during the actual week of events, with the majority of mentions positive and linking to image websites. Edited also rounded up the buzz trends in a report that illustrated favourite designers, styles and prints, as well as key looks from the catwalks (see image below).

With technology and social platforms constantly updating, chatter around Fashion Week or even fashion events will grow immensely. It won’t just be Vogue bringing in the news but loyal brand ambassadors and social influencers. Let’s see how the hype evolves in February.

Ad Tech London Seminar Overview

Ad Tech is an event in Olympia that attracts digital marketers from all over the globe. I went down to check it out Thursday afternoon to see if I could gain any new insight into future trends within the online marketing world.

The Truth Is Out There: A Qualitative Approach To Digital Marketing

The first seminar I attended featured Userlytics who spoke about new processes in collecting qualitative information online which I found really informative. The key method Alejandro (CEO) spoke about was approaching a clients target demographic via social media portals to then ask them to participate in research in their own homes, and in their own time. The subjects will then either be monitored or recorded via webcam when talking part in a task so honest emotional and behavioural results will be discovered. This method decreases biased opinions and the possibility of the subject feeling self conscious which is something marketers have been worried about in the past when it comes to face to face questionnaires and surveys. Subjects will feel more comfortable and less distracted so they are less likely to answer how they think they ‘should’ answer, and therefore answer with as much truth as possible. This method has so far been used to test editorial content, video content and users journey on websites. It is a low cost method which can be used anytime and anywhere and has already made big impacts.

The Relationship Between Innovation, Creativity & Content

The second seminar I attended was a Getty Images presentation that talked about the rising trend of Crowdsourcing images for marketing campaigns via portals such as iStock Photo’s and Flickr. Consumers are warming to imagery in advertisement that relates to their visual taste influences that they are currently getting from social media and blogs because they are getting a sense of realness and emotion. Before now most advertisers were using images that illustrated perfection, however now the traditional rules of photography are broken to try and create a ‘cheap camera’, unpretentious feel.

Professional curation of photos online from the ‘average Joe’ is now an easy and popular way to get images to immediately show a definitive metaphor. This is attracting people because of truthfulness, honesty, and believability, and therefore makes businesses more money.

T-mobile, Puma and Lurpack are some of the few brands that have already spotted and developed this style of advertising. It will be interesting to see how far it will go and who will be the next brand trying to draw in the ‘normal’ consumer.

For Spring Summer 2012 Casadei offers a broad range of sexy, feminine designs that underscore the unique skills practiced by this venerable Italian shoe brand. “This collection represents a cocktail of my personal obsessions,” says Creative Director Cesare Casadei. “I have been thinking non-stop about python, color, design, music and rich materials but wanted to mix them with the special techniques and craftsmanship that only we can achieve.” As always, the proprietary colors and materials  are custom made to Casadei’s exacting specifications while fits are perfected for supreme lightness and comfort.  The result is a collection of totally unique creations for a woman who is not afraid to take center stage.

Andrew Majtenyi Press Presentation

I was lucky enough to be invited to the Andrew Majtenyi London Fashion Week Press Presentation for the Spring / Summer 2012 collection which was amazing!

The afternoon included the man himself talking through his collection, models showing off the pieces, and a lovely selection of food and drink as well as the chance to network with other industry individuals.

What I love about the collection is that the clothing is so glamorous and contemporary, yet very wearable in every day situations. See some of the gorgeous images I managed to take of the clothing and models below.

My Visit To Stratford Westfield

Me and a colleague popped down to the new Stratford Westfield shopping centre yesterday afternoon to see if it lived up to all the hype in the media. As the largest shopping centre now in Europe it had a lot to live up to, especially after the excitement and luxury the White City centre has to offer.

I am personally quite pleased that this has happened in Stratford. Whilst at university in the East London area I used to visit quite a lot to see friends, have drinks and shop. Although I felt a good atmosphere and cultural mix down there, the place did lack a certain modern spark that other areas in London have got.

Seeing this savvy, slick and cool shopping centre right in the middle of town was really kool, even though the crowds there were nearly as busy as a carnival march.
My conclusion is that I would defiantly visit again!

The Specials By Fred Perry

Fred Perry is proud to celebrate their unique relationship with one of the most influential bands of the last century by announcing the release of The Specials 2011 collaboration shirts.

Following on from the success of the 2009 collaboration, Fred Perry have teamed up with seminal band The Specials to create two new styles. Released in anticipation of the band’s 2011 European tour, the two styles stay true to the band’s ethos of ‘black and white unite’ with their monochromatic styling and subtle chequerboard detailing.
